SHOT Show 2015 What’s New for the Outdoorsmen Part 2 By Gary Howey

As I mentioned in my last column, there are hundreds of new products introduced the SHOT Show, the ones I’m listing are but a few of those we found while attending the show.

 Mossberg’s Patriot Series Rifles

Mossberg introduced their Patriot Series of traditionally styled Rifles at this year’s show, taking the most desirable features from their Mossberg centerfire rifles in a re-engineered bolt-action platform, featuring a streamlined bolt handle, redesigned bolt knob and hunter-inspired, classic-style stocks. With over 60 models in 11 of the most popular calibers, including the latest in big game calibers, the 375 Ruger; Bantam and Super Bantam youth versions; and Vortex Optics-scoped combos, there is a modern-day Patriot to suit every hunter’s taste. Every Patriot rifle features Mossberg’s patented LBA™ (Lightning Bolt Action) Adjustable Trigger System. Over 60 models are available, housed in walnut, durable grey laminate, black synthetic or camo-finished synthetic stock options with a traditional, black rubber recoil pad. To complement the stock redesign and improve handling, Mossberg has streamlined the bolt handle, providing additional clearance for gloved hands, and added an aggressively checkered bolt knob, as a first for Mossberg, bolt-action rifles chambered in the new hard-hitting 375 Ruger, which feature cross-bolts in the classic, big game laminate stock versions. Available calibers: 22-250 Rem, 243 Win, 7mm-08, 308 Win, 25-06 Rem, 270 Win, 30-06 Sprg, 7mm Rem Mag, 300 Win Mag, 338 Win Mag and 375 Ruger. If you prefer a more traditional, field-ready gun with black synthetic or walnut stock, check out their scoped combos which include a factory-mounted, 3-9x40mm riflescope or step up to a combo featuring Vortex Optics Crossfire® II riflescope with Dead-Hold® BDC reticle. The Patriot is also available in a tactical Night Train™ package which includes a variable, long-range riflescope and bipod and now is available in 300 Win Mag. Federal 3rd Degree Ammunition

At the show, Federal Ammunition introduced their new Federal 3rd Degree Ammunition, a new turkey load, designed to help turkey hunters put more turkeys down for the count.

In order to understand how this shotgun shell works, you need to get a look at what’s inside of the shell.Pic-3rd Degree

Unlike other shotgun shells, which are, loaded with one size shot 3rd Degree is loaded with a blend of three different size shot, strategically stacked on top of each other in Federals Flightcontrol wad.

In the shell up top you will find 20% of the load being number 6 Flitestopper lead pellets, followed in the center by 40% number 5 copper-plated shot and then at the bottom an additional 40% of Federals number 7 Heavyweight pellets. The pellets come out of your shotgun a 1,250 FPS. The number 6 Flightstopper lead spreads wide for close range while the copper plated number 5 goes down range for medium range targets with the Heavyweight pellets loaded with Federal’s Mag-Shot for long range targets. When you pull the trigger, the number 6 load opens up wide, for close-range patterns, followed by the copper-plated lead for a medium-sized pattern. Bringing up the rear are the Heavyweight pellets in Federal’s Mag-Shok long-range turkey load. Giving you what federal claims to be the best of all worlds: close, medium and long-range knock down power.

Bushnell G Force DX Rangefinder

The new Bushnell G-Force DX is a vertical designed rangefinder with a 6x magnification and can be used for either bowhunting or rifle hunting. Pictured in Realtree Xtra, the unit boasts waterproof construction. It has both the bow and rifle mode, giving the shooter not only the distance, but also giving the archer the compensated yardage range and the rifle shooter the hold over. The G Force DX rangefinder displays the line of sight reading then below displays the angle of the shot for about a second and a half. It disappears and displays the angle compensated or hold over information. No matter what the lighting conditions are users can adjust the intensity of the reticle and readout to one of four different brightness settings. This new unit is now capable of providing .5-yard accuracy out to 199 yard and has the ability to range deer-sized game out to 600 yards and trees out to 900 yards. The unit weighs in at 8 ounces.
